Spanish Springs rides 8-run first inning to win over Galena.
Two of the best offensive teams in northern Nevada, Spanish Springs and Galena, were featured on our Friday Night Rivals game of the week telecast. The Cougars jumped off to an eight run lead before Galena even got to the plate. Left fielder, Donte Smith’s three double and Connor Culp’s two out three run homerun over the left field fence in the top of the first inning were the big blows.
In the top of the third, Spanish Springs added three more runs, on four hits, with Culp, Joey Prizina and Dawson Martin each driving in a run. In the bottom of the inning, the Grizzlies showed their first display of power with solo home runs by Charles Douglas and Niko Pezzonella.
Galena added two more in the fifth, when Andrew West led off with a single and later scored on Cole Demonsthenes double. Left fielder Austin Crofoot’s single plated Demonsthenes. The Cougs added one more run when Culp scored for the third time after doubling and coming home on a double steal. Galena scored sole runs in the sixth and seventh, but it wasn’t enough as Spanish Springs won 12-6.
Tristan Dahir struck out three in 4 2/3 innings and picked up the win. Nolan Craddock picked up the loss, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing 11 of the 12 Spanish Springs runs.
Culp was 3 for 5 with four RBI and three runs scored. He and second baseman Reece Scolari shut the door on an uprising in the sixth inning with a slick 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. John McHenry had a pair of singles and scored twice for the Cougars, while Aidan Elliot had a pinch hit triple for Galena.
